Lighthouses are a lot like fingerprints. Each has characteristics that help differentiate it from others. This helps mariners identify them, and thus determine their location, from out at sea. A unique color, pattern & style establishes a lighthouse's daymark for identification in daylight hours. They also typically have a specific rotation pattern for the light (which is noted on nautical charts) to allow sailors to able to identify each one at night as well.
