On open moorland which is "right to roam"
A week before Christmas 1943, Liberator PB4Y-1 63949 was returning home after a long day on anti-submarine patrol over the Bay of Biscay. The weather had closed in and it was dark and they could not find an airfield. They were low on fuel and the radio had packed in so they decided to abandon the aircraft.Thinking they were over the midlands, the autopilot was set so the plane would crash in the Irish sea when it ran out of fuel. All bailed out and came down safely but near the Wash on the east coast. The fuel began to run out as the Liberator approached Manchester, still with a full load of 16 depth charges, and came down on the moor above Carrbrook. Some of the depth charges spilled onto the moor but none exploded. But if it had come down on one of the nearby towns???
There are only very small pieces now left on the moor.
