Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is located at one of the public-access-street-ends on
Mercer Island.
This location is of particular interest due to the fact that this
is where the ferry from Seattle (Leschi) used to dock, before the
floating bridge was built. There was not much left at the site to
note this, except the street itself goes straight to an elevated
concrete slab at the water’s edge and its not hard to imagine
the vehicle loading ramp that used to extend out to the
ferry.
However the City of Mercer Island has recently (January 2011)
erected a great sign with pictures and historical data to
commemorate this spot.
Parking is permissible near the street end, in front of the posts.
If coming by car, you may consider backing down the road to park,
so you don’t have to turn your car around in a
neighbor’s driveway. Please be very considerate of private
property on both sides of the road. There is no water or beach
access from the street end (unless you fall off the edge!!)
NOTE - For best access to the cache, simply remove the entire top
of the "container", and then unscrew the smaller inner part of the
lid. It has been impossible to keep water out of the container;
please make sure you close ziplock bags tightly over the log and
swag.
After you have retrieved the cache, sit on the edge of the ramp
wall and enjoy the view. Then, after replacing the cache, you
should consider heading a bit further North and East on West Mercer
Way / North Mercer Way to the Roanoke Inn. This neighborhood pub
used to be a real inn too, a place for travelers coming over on the
ferry to spend the night. The pub is a relic of a bygone era;
simple and decent food and drink are served to those of age
only.
