Geocache Description:

One of a series of caches that commemorate historical industrial activities on the Isle of Arran. Each of the 11 caches in the series contains information that you will need to find the bonus cache Arran Industry - Quarry. This cache container is a standard De-Con container hidden close to the Ivy Cottage sand and gravel quarry.

The glacial outwash sands at Cladach on Arran are one of the main UK sources for the coarse sharp sand used by the water supply industry and over a quarter of the British population drink water that has been filtered through Isle of Arran sand. One of the proudest boasts of the quarry owners is that they even export sand to Saudi Arabia; the shape and size of glacial sand being much better suited to water filtration than the very well rounded and fine grained dessert sands.

The cache location is situated close to the route taken by 30,000 of walkers each year as they make there way to and from Goatfell the highest mountain on the island. Even if you are not heading for the heights the if you follow the track past the cache towards Broddick castle and then follow the footpath signs for Glen Rosa it is only about 30 minutes walk to the South African Representative cache [Scotland]. If you pick your time to visit carefully you can also visit the Broddick Highland Games which are held each year close by.
