This is a micro cache hidden within Manokin River Park.
In parts of New England, they are known as a “shire town.” Most of
us know them as “county seats.” In the United States, counties
administer state or provincial law at the local level as part of
the decentralization of state authority. So a county is an
administrative division of a state, which has no sovereign
jurisdiction of its own. The county seat is an administrative
center for that county.
Located at the head of the Manokin River, Princess Anne was
established in 1733. The small town got her name from Princess Anne
of Great Britain, daughter of King George II. The town gained
importance, in the mid 18th century, as a market center because of
river trade and the southward extension of the railroad on
Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Much of the town’s architectural
heritage, about 300 structures within a 150 acre area of old town,
has been preserved and is entered on the National Register of
Historic Places. Born in August of 1865, one of Princess Anne’s own
native sons Phillips Lee Goldsborough served as the Governor of
Maryland from 1912-1916. He later served as a U.S. Senator from
1929-1935.
Princess Anne is also home to the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore (UMES). UMES is a land grant historically black college
founded in 1886. Since it’s beginning, the university has undergone
several name changes and governing bodies. Known as Maryland State
College from 1948 to 1970, the college became one of five campuses
that formed the University of Maryland. In 1988, UMES became a
member of the now thirteen campuses of the University System of
Maryland.
The cache is a small waterproof plastic container. It contains only
a log sheet, so please bring your own writing utensil. Be sure to
replace any "geocover" after finding the cache. A beautiful area
for sight-seeing The Town of Princess Anne exemplifies "Small Town
America."
Special Note from the Hider (redlights): "This cache is the
seventh of what I’d like to see become a series of 23 within the
state of Maryland, one in each county of course. If you are
interested and more importantly willing to help in hiding or
maintaining caches similar to this one - Please contact me."
Congrats to
