This cache is temporarily unavailable.

virtualdavid: Cache is missing, probably due to tree trimming. Several trees have red dots and might be marked for destruction. I'll have to wait until things settle before restoring the cache.

Geocache Description:

Find out if you are smarter than a bear with this cache.

Hiding and finding geocaches reminds me of hiding food from bears when backpacking. So naturally I wondered, are bears smarter than geocachers? This cache commemerates the hiding and seeking portion of backpacking: bear bagging.

When I first started backpacking, in high school, protecting your food from a bear was fairly easy. You hung a bag full of food from a tree with a line tied off nearby. Then the bears grew smarter, and learned to follow the line and break it.

When I was in graduate school here at Stanford, the more complex counter-balance method was required. Two bags were hung over a branch with no line to the ground. Somehow, bears learned to knock these down.

Now, neither of these methods is considered adequate and it is necessary to carry a heavy bear-proof container. You place the container out in the open and the bear bats it around, gets bored and gives up.

See (visit link) and (visit link) for information on some of these techniques.

This cache should not be too hard to find, but harder to retrieve. It will require some wits and thinking. Please restore the cache exactly as you found it. Hopefully you won't get bored and give up on this cache.
