Geocache Description:

A nice hike along a well marked trail will bring you to the cache site. Don't be afraid of the walk from parking to the cache. It is a well marked trail that is 80% in the shade. There is even a nice bench along the way to take a rest and enjoy the scenery. The cache is a 50 caliber Ammo Can.

This cache is placed off the Barnett Reservoir Hiking and Mountain Bike Trail. Be sure to look at the map showing all the available trails at the parking area. I didn't know these trails were here until I was looking for Round Dancer's Snake Pit cache. (Which is very nearby, but not on these trails if you haven't looked for it yet!) When I saw the sign showing all the mountain bike trails, I felt these trails needed a cache to bring others here. So I created On the way to Mule Jail! Fortunately, WoodDuck870 followed suit with Ducks Paradise. RaptorKnight has since also added Armadillo , Skunk, and Possum to the area. Hopefully the draw of these caches in a relatively small area will draw you to these great nature trails.

I think this cache is almost as close as you can get to the Mule Jail Swamp without crossing over onto the hunting club property. (Don't take that as a hint. It ISN'T right next the fence.)

*** Mule Jail
Mule Jail is a swamp which lies principally within the confines of the city of Jackson, Mississippi. It is home to one of the oldest cypress trees in the state of Mississippi. Mule Jail is bounded to the north by the Ross Barnett Reservoir, to the east and south by the Pearl River, and to the west by the Jackson Country Club. Mule Jail is also home to a hunting and fishing club.

*** Legend
The legend associated with Mule Jail varies from family to family, but in general, Mule Jail receives its name from the one-time island that is central to the oxbow lake. During the War Between the States, as the Union army moved through the Jackson area, farmers gathered up as many of the livestock as possible and moved them to this island and cut all access to the island. Thus many animals were spared the sword, and many Mississippi farmers were able to work their fields after the Union army departed.

*** Originally a PMO Cache
(Just for the first 30 Days!) This was initially being listed as a Premium Members Only cache as I think all geocachers should do their part to support Geocaching.com. It was opened to all members 30 days after being published.

*** FTF
Congrats to Ronbo on his first PMO First to Find!

*** Parking
BE SURE NOT TO PARK IN THE GRASS! You will need to park at the boat ramp parking lot. There is ample parking available. Reservoir Patrol is of the opinion that parking anywhere that is not covered with asphalt deserves AT LEAST a talking to and possibly a ticket or tow.
