Mulroy Bay
Mulroy Bay in County Donegal is known as beautiful Mulroy. This
Body
of water stretches from the sea at Melmore head 12 miles to
Milford.
The Atlantic drive follows Mulroy from Milford to
Carrigart, take the R245 from Letterkenny and follow the signs
for
the Atlantic Drive. This cache is placed in small area known as
Woodquarter about 5 KM outside Milford on the Road to Carrigart
and
Downings.
Mulroy Bay is a very difficult navigation for vessels due
to all the rocks, narrows and very fast flowing tides (up to 8
knots in places). Ships carrying flour regularly navigated the
12
miles from Melmore head to Milford under the guidance of a
pilot
until the Milford Bakery closed in the 1980’s. Today Mulroy Bay
is
used mostly by the aquaculture industry for farming Salmon and
the
growing of Mussels.
