Little Bull Island is at the mid-point of the bridge crossing the Wisconsin River at Mosinee (an area once also known as “Little Bull Falls”). The property is owned by the paper mill across the channel (now owned by Expera Specialty Solutions) and includes a Hydro Dam on the south end and the guard locks at the north end. According to a published history of Wausau Paper, the final segment of the dam was put in place in November of 1910, and “The massive turbines arrived the following June. They were so heavy – some 17 tons each – that the bridges and culverts along the route of the special train carrying them had to be propped up to take the load.” The first reel of kraft paper was produced at the mill, originally named Wausau Sulfate Fibre Company, on November 18th, 1911. The island is open to the public for various recreational opportunities. The south end provides a great fishing opportunity. As you head for the cache, you may also notice the remnants of fences and other items used for vegetable gardens which used to be kept here. There are a few deer that spend a lot of time on this island as evidenced by the maze of trails and deer droppings. The listed coordinates are for the first stage and is located in an area which may be a bit wet for a few days each spring during the peak of spring run-off. The coordinates are noted there to find the final, which is in an ammo box. Don’t forget to share a “Little Bull” with everyone! Parking is not allowed anywhere on the bridge or island. Closest parking is along Water Street, the first street on the west side of the bridge.
