Geocache Description:

Who was Rosie? Rosie was a young Gray Whale, who was born in the Sea of Cortez, in Baja California. At birth, he was about 16 feet long, and nursed on 50 gallons of milk per day, which was 53% fat. In early spring, about 75 days after his birth, Rosie and his mother headed north, to the Bering or Chukchi Seas, located off the coasts of Alaska and eastern Siberia. Perhaps they came into Puget Sound so that Rosie's mother might feed.

Rosie's body was found on the southwest side of Whidbey Island, north of Lagoon Point, in December 1998. At over 32 feet in length, he was almost three years old when he died. Had Rosie lived a full life of 50 years or more, he might have grown to a length of 45 feet, and would have weighed about 30 tons.

In November 2000, the US Navy SeaBees brought Rosie's assembled bones to Coupeville wharf, the end of his final journey. You'll find Rosie hanging inside the wharf at the far end of the pier. The location of Rosie's cache, however, is another story. You're on your own to find his cache. When we set the coordinates, we got a range of 20' accuracy. Bring your own pen or pencil, use stealth particularly on busy weekends, and please! Place the cache back insuring that it is wedged tight and only a small corner of the cache is visible. Yes, there is a place to put it where it can be wedged in.

You may wish to browse through the curio shops which are near Rosie, since the owner was kind enough to allow Rosie a cache so near to her final resting (hanging)place.

Rosie's cache is very delicate. Please handle it with care, and if you drop it, it's a gonner. The old hint , "Left of F" no longer applies. I have updated the hint(s) as of July 24, 2015. Above all, have fun.
