Geocache Description:

Road to cache is seasonal and minimum maintenance. Pick your day wisely. Short walk from road, but getting there.

Mitchell Siphon 1

This cache location is part of the Pathfinder Dam irrigation system. Pathfinder Dam is in central Wyoming and provides mostly irrigation water to the central Nebraska Panhandle. Some recreational uses are also provided but mostly the project was for the taming of the mighty North Platte River for irrigable use.

The dam itself was constructed from 1904-1908. The rest of the irrigation has been added to over the course of time. Other dams along the way are Glendo and Guernsey. This particular portion to the canal is called Gering/Ft. Laramie. Other canals include 'Tri-State' and 'Interstate' canals. The 'Interstate' fills Lake Alice and Lake Minatare. All return unused water goes to the North Platte River for use in the Lake McConaughy(Big Mac) system near Ogalala. One of the canals ends in Vance Ne. Look that one up on your map?? Also the trivia ??? for the day, how did Lake Alice get it's name??

This particular feature is an underground siphon. From one end to the other is about .35 miles (as the crow flies). There is a clean out for the siphon between the two ends in the low spot about 50yds. to the west of the fence line. The siphon never completely drains when not in use (I know!).

The road to the cache is on private land, permission has been granted. Road is minimum maintenance and weather will be a problem if you don't pick your time.4X4 is suggested. AAA would have a difficult time finding you out there. Being on private property, respect the owner by staying on the road. No gates need to be opened to access this cache.

Try this on the way , 'Monument View Close-up'.

As usual hide as good or better.
