A multi-stage cache of under a mile, gathering data from historical plaques around the small Cotswold town of Cricklade. The walk is all paved, so this makes an ideal cache for those muddy winter months!
Cricklade means "place by the river crossing", and the town motto "in lovely surroundings", is derived from a 12th century document. Cricklade lies on a kink of the Roman-built Ermin Street and has been described as an example of a Saxon new town. In 1821 William Cobbett described Cricklade as a "villainous hole" due to its poverty!
The co-ordinates above are for a recommended free public car park.
Our thanks to the Cricklade Museum and the Cricklade Historical Society (who frequent the Red Lion pub) for their help in setting this cache.
