Geltsdale - Gairs Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is located in the hills of the northern pennines near to an abandoned building called Gairs.
The cache is accesible on bridleways which mean you can use legs, bikes or even a horse if you so wish.
Gairs is a leftover building from the former mines that can be seen above. The Pennines were once peppered with mines and was a hugely industrial area. The opposite is true now.
This area is also part of a RSPB nature reserve which is paticullarly interested in protecting the very rare Red Kites that breed in the area. These birds are making a comeback to this part of the world travelling down from south west Scotland.
There are a number of good walks that you can do to include this cache, which are up to you. I prefer to start from either Jockey Sheild (NY 557 555) which is near Castle Carrock or Talkin Head Farm (NY 553 564) which both have parking nearby. There are also another cache in the area which you may want to include called Geltsdale Boulder.
