Geocache Description:

In the Pentland Hills, on Castle Knowe, can be found an Iron Age hill fort. What sets this hill fort apart from many others is the souterrain that was built within it. No one is really sure exactly what its purpose was. Some say that it served as food storage, others that it was for defense. Whatever the souterrain is, it's an interesting feature of this place.
The souterrain's interior can be dark at night, so you would definitely need a torch if you wanted to explore it then. In the day, however, it is well lit by skylights that Historic Scotland has put in. There is a gate at the entrance that is usually closed, but every time I have visited, the gate has not been locked.

When you park, you will see a rather large sign warning you that there is an MOD firing range nearby. It warns you to not enter the area if red flags are raised or red lights are flashing. Although the sign is at the entrance to the trail for Castlelaw Hillfort, it actually applies to another area, one that is demarcated with a distinctive fence. You can't miss it because it has red and white striped poles attached to it. At times when there is shooting going on at the ranges, there will be red flags on the fence as well.
Castlelaw Hillfort is open to walkers at those times, but it is, of course, at your discretion to decide if you want to go up when the red flags are flying. When I set the cache, I had a 2 year old with me. The flags were up, and I was passed by a jogger, 2 hillwalkers and a family of four while I was on Castle Knowe. I have walked the area many times, most of the time with the kids, and most people don't even seem to notice the red flags - except to stay away from the distinctly marked fence, that is.
And along that line, I need to remind people that this is a busy place to walk in the summertime. I ask that when you rehide that cache, that you make sure it is completely covered, as it is near a popular trail.
Also, all dogs must be on leads.
THE CACHE IS NOWHERE NEAR THE DANGER AREA, SO DON'T GO NEAR THE FENCE WITH THE RED STRIPED POLES!
