The cache is a plastic container hidden in the castle ruins at the top of Mt. Ariko. First, go to the main part of the castle at the base of the mountain. Pass through the 37 red torii gates as you go up the stairs. When the stairs end, you will find a path to your left that will take you up the mountain. The hike takes less than an hour but it can get a bit steep and slippery at times, so you should wear good shoes.
Izushi Castle was built in 1604 and prospered throughout the Edo period. Very little of it stands today, aside from a restored gatehouse, but it is still an interesting place to visit. Izushi town has many traditional buildings with a charming old-fashioned feeling, and the central landmark of the town is the old Shinkoro tower that once housed the drums used to call workers to the castle each morning. Every November, during the Castle Matsuri, the townspeople re-enact the “daimyo-gyoretsu,” the procession of the feudal lord and his retainers. Besides the castle, many tourists
come to Izushi for its famous soba noodles and white pottery. There is no train line in Izushi (which probably accounts for the preservation of its historic character), so if you are going to come by public transportation you can ride the JR line to Yoka, Ebara, or Toyooka stations and take a bus from there.
