Heritage Center at Pocahontas State Park
Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 2007
beginning at 2:00pm
Yes, that's right! The weather is slowly improving and temperatures
are inching back up to the balmy levels they were way back in ...
well ... January. Animals are roaming the woods, plants are
blooming, and the poison ivy is returning to its annual glory. In
short, it's a great time to be a geocacher.
Speaking of great times, there will certainly be some to be had
at our next quarterly meeting on Sunday, April 22nd in the
luxurious Heritage Center located within the jewel of Virginia's
State Park system: Pocahontas State Park. Not only does the staff
at Pocahontas run the biggest park in the state, they are also the
most courteous and intelligent staff to be found anywhere. And I'm
not just saying that because they let us use their incredible
facilities.
We have lots of stuff to talk about including a couple of big
upcoming events.
First there is that minor little event called GeoWoodstock V
that's being held down the road in North Carolina on Memorial Day
weekend. It's no Richmond Rally but it does attract a good-sized
crowd. In reality it's probably the biggest geocaching event you'll
ever attend and the CVGA plans to make its presence felt over the
weekend. How are we going to do that? Come to the meeting and share
ideas with others who will be attending.
And then on June 9th it's the geocaching spectacle of the year
known as Richmond Rally 4. This event gets bigger and better every
year but based on the emails flying around, this year should really
be special as we have lots of people involved in the planning.
There should be a LOT of different things to do, probably more than
a single person could accomplish, but we need everyone's efforts,
ideas, and enthusiasm to pull it off,
We also have a great training opportunity coming up on Saturday,
June 30th that we are conducting in association with Henrico County
Recreation and Parks Department. The CVGA has signed up to teach a
"Geocaching 101" class at the rec center in Dorey Park in eastern
Henrico. You might recall that this was the site of Richmond Rally
2 back in 2005. The course will consist of a 2-hour classroom
session followed by a 1-hour lunch break and then guided cache
hunts throughout the park. While attendance in the classroom
session is controlled by the county, we are going to make the lunch
and afternoon cache hunts a geocaching event. This will give the
participants an opportunity to experience (and log) a real cache
event while also introducing them to the great people who make up
the CVGA. Again, we need group support to make it happen.
Plus there will be discussion on a variety of other topics. If
there's something you would like to see covered, just hop on th
CVGA Yahoo! Group and post your ideas. If you're not yet a member,
please join us by clicking the button below.
Oh ... and food ... there must be food. This time if you write
in your "will attend" note what you are planning on bringing, we'll
really try to keep it all up to date. No really ... we will.
