Geocache Description:

This particular view of the Comite River is courtesy of the Blackwater Conservation area. For more information on this wonderful area, see http://www.mvn.usace.army.mil/prj/cap/blackwater/.

The Comite River source lies in the hills of the East and West Feliciana Parishes and stretches south past Baton Rouge. When violent rains that frequent the Capitol City region strike, the water that pounds the hills and piney forest in the Felicianas drains down into this usually shallow and calm river and quickly transforms it into a churning pit of death to anything that should be unfortunate enough to fall into it. During such flooding, the water flows southwards sometimes flooding homes in outlying areas east of Baton Rouge. Floodwaters have been recorded to have covered Greenwell Springs Road in extreme conditions. (1)

One misconception about rivers is that they flow north to south. However, rivers always flow from high ground to lower ground. The Nile River of Africa flows from south to north. (2) The Congo River crosses the equator twice, flowing northward to Stanley Falls and then south and west to the Atlantic Ocean. (3)
