Each year in Sept., the NY Capital Region Geocachers holds their annual picnic. In 2007, the picnic will be held at Cherry Plain SP.
Here's a little history of the park and the people that created it. Cherry Plain SP was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1933 and 1937. Created in the first days of Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency, the CCC remains the most widley recognized of the New Deal era's federal programs. From 1933 to 1942, the CCC employed nearly 3 million men. The CCC not only undertook sorely needed enviromental conservation projects around the country, but also gave destitute young men a paycheck, practical training and hope. Many historians credit the CCC with helping save a generation of young men from the poverty and desperation of Americas Great Depression. Some 220,752 men from NY served in the CCC. The men worked on a wide variety of projects, including reforestation, pest control and soil conservation. In our State Parks, they constructed buildings, roads, bridges, ponds, swimming areas, dams, pavilions and many other amenities, some of which still grace our parks. In the late 1920's more than 2,000 acres of land, including what later became Cherry Plain SP, was set aside by NYS as the Capital District Game Refuge. In the 1930's three different CCC companies were stationed at Cherry Plain and worked on the developing refuge. Black River Pond, here in Cherry Plain SP, is a lasting reminder of the CCC's presence. The dam and spillway that impound the pond were built to create a breeding pond for migrant waterfowl.
Now that you've had your history lesson, go find the cache. Satellite signals are very poor under the heavy tree cover but the hint will give it away.
