Legend has it there was once a magnificent cache somewhere near Grey Butte, a cache that challenged both mental and physical abilities but offered great rewards. A few intrepid hunters are reported to have found it while many failed. The cache has not been seen for several years.
It is rumored that one geocacher, somewhere in the later stages of this epic hunt--perhaps even after they found the prize--became disoriented from the exertion, staggered around the ridges for days, ran out of water, and disappeared into a ravine. Their gear was found scattered around the butte except for a water bottle which is still missing. From plotting the locations where they were known to have been, the coordinates above are thought to be a good place to look for the water bottle. The bottle may contain some trinkets left behind, perhaps even clues as to what happened to the geocacher and the legendary cache.
You can take a dirt road to within about a half-mile of the coordinates, where you may contemplate the steep cross-country ahead. From late September to the beginning of April the road is closed to motor vehicles which will add an easy mile or so to your hike. There is also another dirt road in from the west as well as the Cole Loop Trail. Check the Crooked River National Grassland map.
There's a FTF pin for firsties--how many can you collect in the FTF series? Special prizes for top 3 FTF hunters over 10 caches.
Note: There is a code on the inside cover of the log book you will need for a bonus cache (archived) to be placed at the end of the FTF series.
Congratulations to Tbird2LM for being first to complete the FTF series, second to elkjim and third to ItOKurt2Me.
