To find the historical part of this cache go to the west. No more than 200 yards. This place as far as I know of is not registered anywhere for historical sites. It’s historical for the county of Manistee. If I remember the dates right the ruts were made in preparation of replanting of pine trees. I think I was told early 50's Back in the early 1800’s when all of this forest was huge oaks, pine and maple trees. The lumberjacks would move the huge cut down trees on a device called a lumber wheel. Powerful teams of horses pulled the lumber wheels. The lumber was probably moved to the Manistee River . Then floated them by river to the saw mills on Manistee Lake or may have moved them form this spot toward Manistee by land on even bigger lumber wheels. A great example of these lumber wheels is in front of the Manistee county museum on First Street on the way to Lake Michigan. If you want to find the adventure part of this cache go to the east until you find a ravine on a hill. Go down to the cedar swamp and sit there and expririance the sounds of nature. (caution!!!! getting down is a lot easier then getting up). Please be careful there is bear in the area! Make noise while traveling in the woods to avoid bears.
