" In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. "
And so began 'The Hobbit' a fantasy novel by J.R.R. Tolkein which introduced the characters, their history and the world they inhabited in his epic trilogy 'The Lord of the Rings'.
The hobbits almost exclusively lived in an area known as The Shire ( a synonym of county ) which was located in the north-west of the continent Middle-Earth.
This cache is placed in an area known as Butter Bottom, other local features include; Pudding Hill, The Devils Pound, Saddleback Hill and Gorrick Well. Many names of Hobbit locale are reminiscent of Wales or Cornwall, but with a little imagination.....!!
