Would you call this an island, or a lake within the river? You make the call!!
This cache brings you to a nice spot overlooking the Allegheny River where there has been a long history of mining gravel from the island in the middle of the river. At one time they used to load the gravel in barges and float it across the river. If you look close, you can find the inlet where the barge would be loaded at the island. Eventually the island has been pretty well mined outward from the middle toward the river except a little fringe of the island creating a very deep lake in the center of the river. They need to leave the circumference of the island intact to protect the river by serving as a barrier to the sediment from the mining activity. Rumor has it that the lake is a good deep fishing hole now.
A short distance upstream from the cache you will find a conveyor system which now brings the gravel from the island across the river to the processing center on this side of the river. The barges are not used these days.
