The Old Hospital on the Hill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

IronHorseReviewer: [Greetings from Geocaching.com
It looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While we feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from hiding new geocaches around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can't do so forever. Therefore we are archiving this cache so that someone else can place a cache in the area and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. If you haven't done so already, please pick up any remaining cache pieces as soon as possible.

If you are in the process of replacing or repairing your cache please e-mail me in response to this archival, and I will assist you in getting your cache re-listed if possible.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and look forward to seeing your caches up and running in the future.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located near a public place that is very active during the week M-F from 8am until 5:30PM. I recommend that you look for this cache after 6PM or on the weekends. The terrain will involve some hiking. Please use stealth and open your senses to the "Old Hospital on the Hill" There is a public parking lot up here at Pathways.

This cache is based on the old TB Hospital in Ashland, KY. Many say the place is haunted. Though some survived the illness and were able to leave the old hospital, others did not, and took their final breaths within this building. There is an old furnace/chimney construction in the back of the hospital that I have been told was used to burn old linen and clothes after patients passed away, so that the "TB germ" would be distinguished. However, I have also heard that this practice ceased due to the worry that the smoke could still carry TB into the air and community. ( I know nothing official on this) I would be very interested to speak with someone who used to work in this old hospital, or even more interesting, a past patient there! I have worked up on this hill by the old hospital for many years now, and back when Boyd Co. Social Services was housed in the building I was in there at least once a week for meetings and business. I have personally experienced eerie occurrences within the walls, as well as heard similar reports from at least 6 other employees that used to work in the building. There was a certain old bathroom on the third floor that seemed to get attention. I went into it one day after a meeting. The room was dimly lit, and a certain, unnatural chill lingered in areas of the room. There was a heavy “uneasy feeling" hanging in the air as I went into one of the stalls. A few minutes later, two other stalls within the room violently slammed. I was so startled. I peeked under the stall walls and found noone else in the room with me. I could faintly hear someone else breathing in the room with me (although maybe this was my fear influencing my mind and provoking paranoia) but all the same I was sure I could hear it. It was a feeling of certainty that I was not alone. I left as quickly as possible and reported my experience to some other workers who identified with similar experiences and feelings. I have been told there have been the sounds of slamming doors in that bathroom as well as other unoccupied areas of the building. There have also been reports of sighting a young boy, and an old woman walking around inside after hours. I have heard other stories of spotting figures in the windows (before many were boarded up) from the ground below. On the side of the building there is an old basketball goal. Standing from that point if you look up you will see two of the windows on the upper levels of the building are not boarded up. I have a clear view of this window each morning as I pull in for work. I look at it each day, and will swear that there are changes every few weeks or so. This area (to my knowledge) is totally unoccupied. Sometimes the blinds are drawn, and others they are completely up. Once when the blinds were down it appeared that there was someone peeking out of them. Others have also noted movement in the window, and they too have recognized the changes (blinds up, blinds down) Please find the old dumpster and start your GPS reading from here. PLEASE use stealth here. This is a public place( medical office) with much traffic during the day M-F 8:00-5:30pm The weekends are probably the best time to search. After you locate the cache take time to park and walk around the old hospital. Allow your senses to be open minded and note any changes in your emotion as you circle it. It is actually a magnificent historical building, however it may be eventually torn down due to possible asbestos contamination inside. Be sure to look at the window I spoke of and the old furnace in the back. I would love to get permission granted to stay the night in the old place (around Halloween perhaps) just to see what happens…anyone interested in joining me? heheh =o)
