Geocache Description:

Around the World in 175 Days

The opening coordinates will take you to a monument and historical marker at the entrance to the former Sand Point Naval Station. Street parking is available just to the east of the official entrance, and you can easily walk back to the monument. Please be aware of traffic entering and exiting Magnuson Park while you approach the historic marker.

Seattle is home to many innovative and historical firsts, including one that most people have forgotten. In 1924, at the Sand Point Airdrome, the first around-the-world flight began on April 6 and ended on September 28. Four planes were flown together during the 175 days it took to circumnavigate the globe.

The historical marker on the west side of the monument lists the pilots' names and the fates of the four planes that were flown as part of the historic mission. There is also a benchmark to be found on the site of the monument.

On the fourth line of text on the historical marker, you will find a total of 11 numerals. Let those digits be ABCDEFGHIJK.

  • L = A + B
  • M = C - I

The small, cammoed Lock-n-Lock can be found at: N 47 40.GGC, W 122 14.LAM.

Enjoy your visit to Magnuson Park, which opens at 4 a.m. and closes either at 10 p.m. (Labor Day to April 30) or 11:30 p.m (May 1 to Labor Day).
