Rock folds are caused by pressures within the Earth's crust
resulting from plate-tectonic activity. Such deformation occurs in
sedimentary layers.
For deformation of rock to occur, a number of conditions must be
met:
1. Rock material must be able to deform under pressure and
heat.
2. Higher temperatures result in higher plasticity of rock.
3. The pressure applied cannot exceed the internal strength of the
rock.
4. Deformation must be applied slowly.
At the posted coordinates is a perfect example of an anticline
rock fold occuring in Cambrian-Ordovician (ca 500 mya) rocks.
In order to claim this EarthCache
please post a picture of you and/or your GPS with the fold in the
background. Also, e-mail to me the approximate height and width for
the fold.
You DO NOT need to wait for confirmation
from me to log your find. However, logs not meeting ALL
requirements will be deleted.
