This cache is placed in an area locally known as “Pine Hollow” near
the end of the Highlands Trail in the Musconetcong Gorge section of
the Musconetcong River Reservation. Parking is located on Dennis
Road. This moderate to difficult trail winds through a hardwood
forest, and ends at a grove of (what is left of) some Eastern
Hemlocks. The trail can be quite tricky in places, sturdy hiking
boots are highly recommended. I would also suggest bringing a
friend or two along. The Ridge Trail departs from the right side of
the parking lot and runs along the ridge of the mountain to the
ravine. After passing through the ravine the trail is called the
Highlands Trail. A new sign posted at the trailhead denotes that
“You Are In Bear Country”. I can vouch for this warning as I
encountered a black bear about 50 yards from GZ. Container is a
medium sized camouflaged Lock and Lock container containing plenty
of good swag and a log book. Please be sensitive to the area as
nothing needs to be disturbed to make the find. Information on the
area and a copy of the trail map can be found
here. My track log shows a hike of about 4 miles out and back.
The premise behind this hide is to show you this trail, a rather
large glacial erratic and the scenic vistas along the way. I was
lucky enough to observe a red tailed hawk riding the thermals while
looking down upon him. You would be cheating yourself of fantastic
scenery and quite a hike by taking another approach. Please be sure
to replace the cache as you found it. Be safe, good luck and happy
hunting!
