Kentucky's Fish and Wildlife's most successful program is the reinterduction of the Eastern wild turkey. In the early 1900's the wild turkey was hunted to near extinction. Through relocation and trapping from other western states, kentucky now has a very healthy wild turkey population. In the spring these fields and forest come alive with the sounds of the male wild turkey gobbling and strutting to attract mates for their breeding season. The mature males are called Toms, the young males are called Jakes. Male wild turkeys have the ability to change the color of their heads and neck to bright red, blue and white. Adult turkeys consume mostly acorns, nuts, leaves insects and seeds. The young feed mostly on insects, snails and spyders. During the breeding season, the male turkey fans out his tail to attract females and advertise dominance over the subordinate males within the flock. Kentuckys turkey hunting season starts in mid april and runs through the first week in may. In the fall there is another season of dates in Oct, Nov, and December. Please bring a pen to sign. There is an old barbed wire fence down near the cache site, so be careful around it and Good luck.
