Walk The Planks To The Beach Multi-Cache
YahotsWalker: Well I guess it is time to pull the plug on this one. I have tried to keep this one going for some time but it seems that the 2nd stage keeps disappearing and the person living to the south of the final as never seemed that friendly to folks looking for something under the log bench. Also the bench is in need of repair and one of these days it will have to be replaced altogether.
This was designed to show off the boardwalk and provide a trip to the overview of the ocean from a small tucked away location along the 804 trail. All of this is supposed to be fixed up sometime in the next few years and turned over to the City of Yachats as it is still a Lincoln County RD. Who knows when that will really happen, but I think it is time to retire this one. It has been a good run but with the bricks wearing down and the stages disappearing enough is enough.
Good by old friend, YahotsWalker aka Bob

This multi-cache takes you from the Yachats Commons, across a wetland, and to an overview of some Pacific tide pools just off a restored portion of the 804 South trail. The one-way distance is about 0.3 miles over pavement, boardwalk, and packed gravel streets and walking trails. The final cache is a 1 x 4 inch tube attached to a piece of wood.
The Yachats Commons is the community center in the heart of Yachats on the central Oregon coast. The building was built in the 1930s and was used as a school until 1983 when it closed. Many locals fondly remember their early school days here. In 1990 the building was purchased by the City of Yachats to be used as a community center. It is now the heart and soul of the greater Yachats community, being host to such events as ballroom dances, classes, political meetings, exercise classes, plays, musical productions, craft fairs, farmers markets, the youth center and much, much more.
Behind the Commons is a playground and covered picnic facility. There is also a small children’s garden and trellised walkway. Further to the east is a restored wetland with a boardwalk allowing a visitor access to the area without getting wet feet. High above is an Osprey nest still waiting for its first tenant.
The area is nice to just visit and enjoy the peace and quite of an Oregon seaside village. Consider taking a lunch and let the kids play in the park.
Parking is located on the North side of the Commons at 44-18.782 N, 124-06.308 W. There are two Handicapped parking slots. The cache may be suitable for wheelchairs. The final cache is located under a bench so if you use a wheelchair you may be able to retrieve it without help.
To begin the multi-cache you must first collect some information from the kiosk located at 44.18.780 N. 124.06.327 W which is near the head of the trail leading to the wetlands. The information is both on the Map and the Plants and Wildlife List. Answer the following questions to get the values for solving the location of the 2nd stage.
a - How many letters are in the name of the 5th plant listed under Other Plants?
b - How many words are in the last bird name on the list?
c - How many letters in the 5th bird name on the list minus 1.
d - What is the street (it is a number) that connects by a boardwalk to the deck by the big spruce?
e - How many words are in the first bird name on the list?
f - What is the street that goes by the Library and Ball Diamond on the Map?
The 2nd cache coordinates are 44-18.abc N, 124-06.def W. Since even the rest of the way to the final location can be found at the 2nd cache I can’t make it too easy so you will need to use the standard Geocaching decoder ring to transcribe the hint at the 2nd cache. So don’t loose that paper and pencil before you start.
Please Use The Hint For The Final!! This cache has been muggled 3 times and I suspect that the neighbor to the north of the cache sees folks looking around and grabs the cache when they are gone. Please replace carefully so as not to jam it in an maybe this time I can keep this cache up and running.
For those who need a hint where the path actual starts (it is right over there!!) the coordinates for the start of the path are 44-18.774 N, 124-06.329 W. So get going and Walk The Planks To The Beach!! Enjoy!!
Please note: THERE IS NO NEED TO LEAVE EITHER THE BOARDWALK OR THE TRAIL AT THE END. REMEMBER IT MAY BE POSSIBLE FOR SOMEONE IN A WHEELCHAIR TO DO THIS. THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GO OFF THE BOARDWALK OR OFF THE MAIN TRAIL AT THE FINAL. Coastal vegetation and wetlands are delicate. Please respect the land.
First reports of the coords at both ends are a little squirrelly and I have re-checked them. I did have some problems even with 4-5 marks of each site. What you have is the best average of what I got with a Megellan XL.
