Geocache Description:

The cache is near the Arch of Kabah on the sacbe (raised road) in the Kabah Archeological Zone in Yucatan Mexico.

I went to Mexico with some travel bugs hoping to find a cache to leave them in. The cache I had in mind was on a heavily guarded resort so I decided to create my own cache as a travel bug hotel. A local custodian has been appointed. The cache is in the Kabah Archeological Zone, 22km south of Uxmal and 8km from Santa Elana on hwy 261. Park at Kabah and pay the 34 peso admission fee. The cache is near the Arch of Kabah on the Sacbe (raised road) which joins Kabah and Uxmal. The arch is on the west side of the hwy opposite the main site.

The cache contains an LED flashlight as a first-to-find prize. Kabah is an impressive Mayan archeological site that is pleasantly remote compared to Chichen Itza and Tulum.

Kabah's temples were constructed in AD 850-900, though the area was probably settled as far back as 300 BC to AD 250. Codz Poop is Kabah's most ornate building. Dedicated to the rain god, Chac, and measuring nearly 45 m long and 6 m high, the temple's entire west facade is a series of 250 masks with the typical elongated, curved nose, some almost a complete circle. It's thought that small pits on each mask were used to burn incense or oil. Imagine a wall of exotic stone masks lit up with incense as the drums beat out prayers for rain.
