Geocache Description:

This is both a mystery cache, and a part of the mystery cache ChemCache IIB - Zn/Cd/Hg Group. Collect the codes to solve the puzzle. PLEASE NOTE THE ADDITIONAL FIND REQUIREMENT (request) LISTED BELOW! The coordinates are correct - it is the additional requirement that makes it this type of cache.

Due to Rule Changes from Groundspeak in April of 2009, the photo requirement for this cache is now a suggestion - it is NOT required, and your log will not be deleted if you choose not to follow this old requirement. I do not agree with this change, but players were not given the choice to grandfather ALR's, so it now becomes a suggestion. If you can, please honor the original requirements of this cache and post a photo. If you choose not to... it's your choice. Thanks!

Cadmium is available in many forms including foil, granules, pellets, sheet, powder, rod, shot, sticks, wire and "mossy cadmium". Small and large samples of cadmium foil, sheet, and wire can be purchased from Advent Research Materials via their web catalogue.

Cadmium is a soft, bluish-white metal and is easily cut with a knife. It is similar in many respects to zinc. Interestingly, aa characteristic cadmium "scream" is heard on bending a cadmium bar. Cadmium and its compounds are highly toxic. Silver solder, which contains cadmium, should be handled with care.

Isolation
Here is a brief summary of the isolation of cadmium. It is rare that preparation of cadmium in the laboratory should be required bacause of environmental concerns about cadmium. The isolation of cadmium is associated with zinc recovery as cadmium is an impurity in zinc ores. Most zinc production is based upon sulphide ores. These are roasted in industrial plants to form zinc oxide, ZnO. This may be reduced with carbon to form zinc metal, but in practice ingenious technology is required to ensure that the resulting zinc does not contain oxide impurities. ZnO + C ? Zn + CO ZnO + CO ? Zn + CO2 CO2 + C ? 2CO After this process, zinc may be refined by distillation under vacuum and this process also allows the separation of any cadmium present in the crude zinc. The other type of extraction of zinc is electrolytic. Dissolution of crude zinc oxide, ZnO, in sulphuric acid gives zinc sulphate, ZnSO4 in solution. Before electrolysis to produce zinc, the cadmium impurity and is removed as a precipitate by the addition of zinc dust as cadmium sulphate.

This cache is listed as a mystery cache because of one specific requirement in order to claim a find. You MUST post a photo of yourself with something containing the element Cadmium, or a photo of your GPS with something containing the element. It doesn't have to be at the cache site. You might need to do just a little research to come up with ideas for what to get a photo with, but you have MANY very common options! Each photograph for each log entry must be unique.

Found it logs posted without the required photograph attached within 48 hours WILL BE DELETED. Please don't make me be the bad guy, and follow the rules for this one!

PLEASE NOTE: The magnet is inside under the log container - it is NOT secured to the cache in any way. Please attempt to not lose it when signing the log. If you think you did lose it, please post that in your log, so I can replace it ASAP - it's not required for the hide, but more likely to keep it from getting lost.

Make sure you obtain the codes for the final puzzle cache in this series, if you plan to complete the final.

GOOD LUCK!
