Geocache Description:

This cache was originally called Turkey Creek Sanctuary East. I have since learned that this area is actually part of the Malabar Scrub Sanctuary West. Together, Turkey Creek Sanctuary, Malabar Scrub Sanctuary East and West, and Cameron Preserve form a relatively large conservation corridor for wildlife and recreation.

Future home of the South Region Management and Education Center, the variety of habitats found on the 395-acre Malabar Scrub Sanctuary make it an ideal place for visitors to learn how wetland and upland communities interact. The protected habitats include xeric (dry) hammock, scrub, scrubby flatwoods, pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub, ponds, sloughs, and depression marshes. Trails weave through many of these natural communities, including several areas recently treated with prescribed fires. Fire is a natural factor in many of Florida’s ecosystems, and hikers will be amazed at the lush, green regrowth in areas that were burned only a short time ago. The sanctuary is a refuge for the Florida scrub-jay, gopher tortoise, and Eastern indigo snake. Service animals only, no smoking or alcohol. Please don't disturb the wildlife! Trails open October thru April from 7:00am to 6:00pm, May thru September from 7:00am to 8:00pm.

This cache has been placed in the western section of the sanctuary. The nature trails are simply gorgeous in this area! There are many trails you can take, but for the absolutely most beautiful walk, always choose the path to the right (if you start at the Briar Creek Blvd entrance). You will start in the sand pine scrub, wander through the mesic hammock, back into the sand pine scrub, and finally end up in the hydric hammock. You'll cross the creek shortly before coming to the cache location.

Permission was given by the EEL to hide this cache. Parking is available off Briar Creek Blvd, at N28 00.642, W80 35.805. It is approximatley a half mile walk to the cache, which is an ammo can hidden just off the trail. No need to trample any vegetation. In the rainy season, the entire area can get quite wet, and occasionally the trails will be closed for safety.

Please Note: Cache was moved and coords were changed on November 2, 2007. New location is about 40 feet from old. Please make sure you have the updated coords before searching for the cache!
