Welcome to “A Walking Tour of Centerville. Centerville has a
large collection of stone buildings, and many of the hides are in
the heart of the architectural preservation district. The hides
aren't anything special...but the places they take you to (and
past!) are notable.
Elisha Jones House
23 S. Main St.
Located along Main St. just north of this cache is the Elisha Jones
House. The original stone cottage was built before 1810 and is
located along the alley and behind the front two-story section that
was built in 1822. This house is an excellent example of Federal
architecture. The stone walls measure 20 inches thick and is one of
the best preserved limestone houses having most of the original
structure still intact. The house is said to have been the
handiwork of Jonathan Munger, an early stonemason of the
community.
Phoebe Hatfield House
39 S. Main St.
Also just north of tha cache is the Phoebe Hatfield House. This
Victorian-era house was built in 1882 for the widow, as a part of a
small "town farm." Farmers, who were advanced in years and could no
longer work their land, built these grand houses along South Main
St. where they could retire but still have a small garden. The
front porch is classic revival with Greek ionic columns.
Newport/Kindle House
89 S. Main
Continue walking south past the cache and you will see this
mid-1830s Federal style house is an outstanding example of
limestone craftsmanship. Built by Daniel Newport, the two-story
house was typical of other early village houses; one-room first
floor, fireplace and cupboards on the south wall, and an enclosed,
winding stairway that led to the sleeping quarters above. The wood
frame addition is of early vintage. Joseph Kindle purchased the
house in 1842. He served as justice of the peace for 21 years. The
stone portion was restored in the early 1960s.
