Geocache Description:

This cache is for the serious bushwalker only. It is on the West Peak of Mt Barney, a rugged and remote area of national park. Cachers need to be fit, at home in the bush, have good navigation skills and no fear of heights to attempt this cache.

In keeping with the tradition of using gatoraid bottles on Mt Barney the cache is a 1 litre blue bottle . It contains a log book and a few trading items. The cache is at 1365 m elevation making it I think the highest cache in SEQ. The cacher neeeds to gain 1100m from their car to the cache. The peak lies to the west of the Rum Jungle saddle and "Purple Dinosaur Mountain". There is no real track up the west peak, it's steep, rugged and parts of the assent border upon technical rock climbing. The general route is to follow the slab behind PDM west until you find a rough track through some low scrub. When you hit a steep rock face bear right until you find a steep gully to ascend. From the top of the gully find the path of least resistance until you once again come to the base of a cliff. Bear right again until you find an even steeper and scary looking gully. Climb the gully with care to the peak. Allow between 6 and 8 hours for the return journey and take at least 4 litres of water per person as well as all the usual supplies for an extended day off track. Also please let someone responsible know your intentions. This is very rugged country with limited phone coverage. Take care and enjoy.
