Geocache Description:

Built in 1822 over looking the Genesee River the Charlotte-Genesee lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse on the great lake. Standing 40 feet tall it's original lantern housed 10 Argand lamps with reflectors fueled by whale oil. In 1853, a Fourth Order Fresnel lens was installed with a new lantern. In 1881, the lighthouse was taken out of commission. The Lighthouse Service continued use of the keeper's residence until 1940. The Coast Guard assumed control at that time and the house became residence of the Coast Guard station commander. In 1991, the site was deeded to Monroe County. Monroe County now leases the lighthouse to the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society.

The lighthouse museum and tower are open from May to November 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Friday, Saturday & Sunday and Monday. Special group tours can be arranged by calling the Lighthouse at (585) 621-6179. For further information visit the lighthouse WEB site at: www.geneseelighthouse.org or call 621-6179.

I decided to put this cache here at the lighthouse because my Great-Great Grandfather was the last private person to man the lighthouse.

I have placed a 50cal ammo box on location with a logbook and a pen. You can find the cache when the lighthouse is open or when it is not open.
