A great hike to a fantastic view awaits you!
We are currently working our way through Vermont on a quest to complete the Vermont 3 plus DeLorme Challenge (GC10H60). We needed to place a cache on page 52 as we have already completed the only 3 plus cache on that page. Studying the DeLorme we spotted a couple of trails that lead to nice views, one on Laraway Mountain and the other on Belvidere Mountain. Upon further research we found that there is a fire tower on the top of Belvidere. Oh, now that is where we want to put our cache.
Although the peak of Belvidere is very close to the edge of page 52, I was confident that it would be where the DeLorme indicates and headed out to design our cache.
As I stood on top of the mountain and acquired the coordinates I was horrified!! Wait a minute, somebody moved the mountain!! How in the world could I be standing in page 53 of the DeLorme? Something must be wrong.
We are currently trying to find out who is responsible, but in the meantime to find the first stage you must correct the listed West coordinate 0.171 minutes due east to make up for the distance that someone somehow moved the top of this mountain!!
The cache:
This cache is all about the hike, the destination and the wonderful views you will encounter. Depending on how you go, it is at least a 2.5 mile hike up to the peak, with an elevation gain of 2,100 feet.
From the parking (N: 44deg 47.453 / W: 72deg 31.178), follow the blue-blazed Frank Post Trail. You will come to a junction with Forester’s Trail at N: 44deg 47.615 / W: 72deg 31.758. Follow Forester’s Trail to the Summit Trail at N: 44deg 46.444 / W: 72deg 33.196.
(It is also possible to make an 8 mile loop using the Frank Post Trail all the way to the Long Trail, then head south to the Summit trail and finally return via Forester’s Trail. Note: If you plan on making this a loop hike, please plan on returning via Forester’s Trail, remember this is a multi-cache.)
Please note, I went up and back twice and it was only on the final trip down that I actually didn't lose the blue blazed trail. Toward the top, perhaps the last 400 meters to the Summit Trail Jct, is where I had difficulty keeping on the blue blazes. Look at the topography, be prepared! It's a long hike, but the top on a clear day is worth it!
The cache is a two-stage multi. At the first stage, you are looking for something that contains the coordinates to the final. (There are two objects with the coords for the final. They are identical, the reason for 2 is only to be sure you find what you are looking for. This cache is about the hike, not about some difficult hide.)
The final is a regular-sized container. The stages are winter friendly, first stage would need many feet of snow, and the final, although it is on the ground and would be buried in the winter, where you need to start digging/looking will be obvious.
