Another cache on the Tanbark Trail in the Allegheny National Forest. This is the second coming of this cache as it has been relocated and updated as a new cache to remain in compliance with the policy of moving caches annually to avoid damage to the natural resources. Even if you have already found the original, you may find it and log it again in its new location. The coordinates above take you to the Heart’s Content Scenic Area where you will glean information from a display to gather the coordinates for the final stage. The final stage is along the Tanbark Trail. (The final stage is NOT in the Scenic Area.) Heart’s Content Scenic Area This National Natural Landmark consists of 122 acres. Approximately 26 acres of this is old growth forest with White Pine, Eastern Hemlock and American Beech. Some of these trees are 300 to 400 years old and hold records for their size. Heart’s Content Scenic Area is one of the best known places on the Allegheny National Forest. The land was once owned by the Wheeler family who wanted to preserve the old forest around their hunting camp and so did not cut the trees. The depression era Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the campground, picnic area and pavilion in 1936. Be sure to take the one mile interpretive trail which winds through the old growth forest to get a feeling for what the forests looked like before the Europeans arrived. There are other trails nearby, as well as a picnic area and a hand hewn log display. The Hickory Creek Wilderness Area is also nearby. Just down the road is the moderately developed Heart’s Content Campground with 26 campsites with picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. Vault toilets, pressurized water are available. There is also a small playground. For more information, see the Allegheny National Forest website. There is also a benchmark located near the old fire tower in the campground. The coords for the final stage are represented as: N 41* 41.ABC W 079* 14.DEF Where: A = the second digit of the year that the descendents of Wm. Wheeler and Henry Dusenbury donated the original 20 acre stand of old growth timber. B = the first digit in the length in miles of the Tom's Run loop. C = the third digit in the total acreage of the Heart's Content Scenic Area. D = the 2nd digit in the year that the Heart's Content Scenic Area was dedicated. E = the number of Wilderness Areas in Pennsylvania according to the display. F = the sum of the first two digits in the year by which Warren County became a great lumber center with over 100 saw mills.
