Geocache Description:

The dead centre of any town is its cemetery and this is no different for the folk of Gawler, with its main cemetery at Willaston.

Because of this being one of the earliest settlements beyond Adelaide, Willaston has some of the earliest graves in the state. It contains burials from the many small surrounding hamlets which existed in the area as well as Gawler. The earliest burial (according to records) was in 1867.

Covering an area of around 25 acres (10 hectares) and being a square, the roadways are laid out in the form of a cross, with a circular drive surrounding a cross shaped wall of remembrance in the centre.

Prominent people who contributed greatly to the local district who are buried here include:
Henry Coombe, the editor of the Gawler Bunyip newspaper;
Frederick May, a farming and mining machinery manufacturer of some renown in his time, with BHP extensively using his equipment and
James Martin, who set up an engineering business (in partnership with May) and most famously known for producing more than 100 steam powered railway locomotives.

All of these men served the community through local government, with Coombe and Martin also being State Government representatives.

The outer perimeter of the cemetery is surrounded by native vegetation with a walking trail through it and its here you will find the cache. Be aware of muggles walking dogs, riding bikes and jogging.

Please read the clue provided to avoid disturbing the native vegetation in this area. Also, the cache container only fits in one way, so take note when retrieving it. And BYO pen.
