Fire on the Hill
The Story of Constitution Hill
In 1788, Lanesborough Representative Jonathan
Smith left for Boston, to attend the convention which
would decide whether Massachusetts would accept the
Constitution of the new United States of America. Before
leaving, he requested that if Massachusetts did ratify the
constitution, a large bonfire be built on top of Bald Hill the highest, most visible location in Lanesborough, totally
devoid of trees except for one huge red oak at the summit.
In February, 1788, after an impassioned speech by Smith
in favor of ratification, the Constitution was approved and
the celebratory bonfire was lit and was seen for miles
around. Bald Hill was subsequently renamed Constitution
Hill.
The lone huge red oak, a picture of which now
graces the Lanesborough town flag, became known as the
Constitution Hill Oak. Though damaged by lightning, it
stood until 1920 when it was burned down by vandals.
In the following year, 1921, near the place of the
original Constitution Oak, Archibald K. Sloper planted a
young red oak to commemorate the place of the original
tree, and to honor the Lanesborough veterans of World
War I. This tree is still alive today.
Our Tree Committee, in collaboration with the
Berkshire Natural Resources Council and the
Lanesborough Historical Committee will mount a plaque
on top of Constitution Hill to mark this historic spot.
The small clear tupperware cache with small log and pencil is not located too near the Red Oak or the plaque, but perhaps it'll give you an excuse to take a walk up here to find them.
