Bruce Trail Project
As a family, we enjoy our Tupperware hunting, forest exploring treks. We've vocalized that a typical geocacher, ourselves included, will turn back once the cache is found. Also, we generally avoid single caches that are over 600 metres into a trail. We've laughed at ourselves, saying, 'It'd be good one of these days to actually complete the section of trail we're on and see the beauty of the whole experience.' Alas, the allure of finding more caches is stronger than continuing the current hike.
Ah ha! With proper motivation, we realized that we would be inclined to do a longer hike. Therefore, we wouldn't miss out on neither beauty nor geocache finds: the best of both worlds!
Already, the breath-taking, Niagara Escarpment preserving Bruce Trail is home to a few showcasing caches by fellow geocachers. We've decided to combine our caches with these already placed ones, to form a continuous trek that cachers could take while picking up a cache every 3 to 5 hundred metres.
The Hockley Valley section of the Bruce Trail is close to home for us, so that is where we have begun our project. Any cacher who wishes to place a cache to keep up the 'motivation' is welcome to!
Now all we need is someone to pick us up at the other end...
Bi-Direction Multi-Cache
Note: Bring a pen and paper to solve this little mathematical challenge!
There are sections of the Bruce Trail that detour along km stretches of road or go through Provincial Parks where no caches are allowed. For these sections, we've set up "Bi-Directional Multi-Caches." These are specifically designed for hikers with the intent that they don't have to double back at any point. To accomplish this, we've set up two multi-caches which have puzzles to solve their opposite. Since these multi-caches solve each other, we can't post the starting co-ordinates. Instead, we have placed the starting co-ordinates in the nearest traditional cache.
When visiting the north or south bound traditional cache, taped to the lid you will find the co-ordinates to the final stage of the closest multi. (Remember, the start location of the south bound multi, is the same as the final for the north bound. This allows you to log both multi-caches while still walking only one direction.) Once you arrive at the co-ordinates that were taped to the lid of the original traditional cache, you will find a puzzle to complete the second multi of the bi-directional set.
Since both finals are in the traditional caches at either end, we realize that you could potentially cheat and that's okay too if you're a car person!
