Geocache Description:

Between 1905 and 1913 the Welby stage ran between Princeton and Penticton on a portion of the Dewdney trail. The cache location was probably one of the scarier sections of the trail.

The Dewdney Trail (visit link) was constructed from Hope to Rock Creek by the Royal Engineers in 1860-1861. The wagon road was to be 4 feet wide (1.2 meters) with a rise of no more than one foot over 12 feet (3.65 meters). Edward Dewdney was awarded the contract to build the trail. He quit after just 9 miles the first summer in a dispute over the route that the Engineers had surveyed and the miners that wouldn’t pay the toll, as well as badly damaging sections, in their rush to the gold fields of Rock Creek. Dewdney returned the next spring along with Walter Moberly and finished the trail to Rock Creek.

The Welby stage (visit link) is stored at the Princeton Museum. For more info (visit link)
Park at the suggested coordinates, a foot path will lead you onto the trail. Some of the sections are starting to slough away, so they are in pretty rough shape. Walk a little ways past the left turn arrow (past the tree) so that a common trail isn’t formed up the slope. Cache, with the usual contents, is a cylindrical lock and lock. No need to rip things apart

Camping is available across the road, and if it’s a warm day there is a nice swimming hole, just to the West of the parking. Enjoy
