Dundee is the only city in Britain lucky enough to
have a population of Red Squirrels.
The Sustain Dundee Red
Squirrel Project aims to protect and enhance the city’s
threatened population of red squirrels. Not long ago these animals
were common throughout Dundee but the rising population of
competing American grey squirrels has put their survival in danger.
Now they are confined to Camperdown Park, Templeton Woods, Caird
Park, Liff Hospital and the surrounding areas.
The Project is helping the red squirrel by taking practical action
in and around the remaining strongholds. Volunteers and interested
organisations are working together. Volunteers carry out surveys in
parks and woods every month to keep records of reds and monitor
greys moving into the area. The City
Council is managing its woods to make them more suitable for reds,
producing feeders that can only be entered by reds and
trapping and shooting greys in areas already lived in by reds.
Project Officers give public talks and lessons in schools
explaining the importance of the reds.
Templeton is one of the areas with a healthy population of Reds.
Hopefully you will spot one or more on your visit.
Other animals to be found in Templeton include Roe deer, Tawny
owl, Jay and when the cache was set a pond full of frogspawn
and frogs.
Parking, toilets, Picnic tables etc available at Templeton
visitor centre (follow roadsigns)
Cache is buggy friendly until the last 80m. The last section of
the walk could be boggy and muddy in wet weather.
Please dont attempt this cache at night as its a lovely area
during the day but "unsavoury activities" are known to occur at
night (hence the CCTV camera signs in the car park)
