HECTOR MACDONALD MEMORIAL
Dingwall

Hector MacDonald was born in 1853 at Rootfield, on the Black Isle and served his apprenticeship as a draper in Dingwall. He joined the Gordon Highlanders as a private in 1870 and rose to the rank of Major General, an altogether amazing feat. He served with distinction in the Sudan, where he conquered the Dervishes, (thus avenging General Gordon), and in India. He was eventually knighted by King Edward VII on 13 May 1901.

His glittering career was blighted in 1903 when grave charges were brought against him, resulting in his suicide in Paris on 25 March 1903.  He was buried in Edinburgh without the military honours he so richly deserved.

The Hector MacDonald Memorial, erected in honour of our local hero, was finally opened on 23 May 1907, having been funded through public subscription. It stands in an imposing position on Mitchell Hill, overlooking Dingwall. Views extend in all directions, most especially across the firth to Rootfield, where this amazing man’s story began.

This cache visits memories of a number of other notable local people who now lie here. Some of them, such as Sandy Macrae, the last Provost of Dingwall, will feature in new caches to be placed soon. In the meantime, take a few moments to browse the rich and varied history and culture illustrated by the headstones here.
