Spot the Cemetery Shapes Mystery Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This very easy puzzle cache is located adjacent to the Interstate 79 South on ramp in Canonsburg. The puzzle fun takes place in the Speer Springs Cemetery. This cemetery is what is left from the old mining town portion of Canonsburg. The old town has been long ago replaced with new businesses and restaurants. The cemetery was overgrown and forgotten until the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church took over the upkeep. Many of the graves date back to the 1800’s. The Speer Spring still runs behind the cemetery property. The large oval rock stone in the puzzle cache inspired the theme for this cache. We’ve never seen a stone before quite like it. It looks more like a prop from a dinosaur movie or an episode of Power Rangers. Parking for the cache is located at N40 15.649 W080 10.526 at the right side of the cemetery on the road leading into the office park. Please watch for cars entering and exiting the office park and you do not need to get close to the busy traffic on Weavertown Road if you park at the coordinates indicated. As noted the final is a micro container and you will need to bring a pen to log. Please take extra care with the container and replace it as found.
Fill in the following coordinates by finding the shapes listed below. When you have found the correct shape locate the” last” name on the marker and follow the directions given below. N 40 15.ABC W 080 10.DEF
A= Find the only pine tree in the very back of the cemetery(away from the main road) and locate the rectangular marker directly in front of it. Use all of the letters in the last name to calculate the number. Update: the tree has been cut down but a stump remains directly behind the stone you are looking for. There is a small stone to the right of it that was placed for a child and a stone that has its engraving on the side that is not facing you.
B= Move towards the front area of the cemetery (towards the main road) and find the marker with the arched opening cut from the center of the stone. Be sure to find the last name (read carefully) on this one and use all of the letters in the last name to calculate the number. As of September, 2014 this stone has fallen off it's base. Look on the ground, still useable. As of August, 2025 the name is still visable from the front but getting hard to read at the angle it is in. The answer is 8.
C= Next find the very large oval rock and use all of the letters in the last name to calculate the number. D=While in the front of the cemetery find the marker with the urn shape on top of it. Find the last name and subtract 1 from the total to calculate the number.
E= Now moving towards the right and back of the cemetery locate the two separate cylinders that are side by side. Use the smaller last name to calculate the number.
F= Finally find the three large looking chess pieces all in a row. They will all have the same last name. Subtract 7 from the last name to calculate the number.
