This cache is located along the Big Break trail, part of the East Bay Regional Park Districts extensive trail system. You can go for a leisurely stroll, jog or bike ride along this mostly paved pathway. It will take you alongside one of the few remaining wetland areas in the Bay Area where you can observe a variety of plant and animal life. Many species of waterfowl, shorebirds and even raptors are usually present as well as (if you look closely) reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans and mammals. If you look even closer, microscopic life abounds here as well. And as the cache name implies, you may see turtles in the.... uh....er...pond. Swimming is not recommended here as the pond is part of the Iron House Sanitation Districts waste water treatment facility. The cache aims to raise awareness of our rapidly diminishing wetlands. A full 90% of the original Bay Area wetlands are now gone due to development and backfilling for various purposes. They are invaluable to the health of our local environment as a whole. And serve as a home to many indigenous and migratory animal species They work so well at water filtration that they serve in this case as the final discharge point for wastewater to complete the purification process. You are looking for a quart size plastic camoed jar. The original contents are, log/ pencil and well, turtles of course. Please try to keep your trades to nature and wildlife related items (turtles would be great) as this is the purpose of the cache after all! And remember to tread lightly and respect our Mom (Mother Nature that is) while caching. Caution: Muggles may come around the corners of the trail and be able to see you from a long ways away, use stealth.
