Over 2000 feet high on Baugh Fell Plateau
Rawthey Source on Baugh Fell is close to the place where gutters on the plateau merge to become the deeply-cut Rawthey Gill, the source of the River Rawthey, a tributary of the Lune. The main stream seems to be underground, near to the cache, but in wet weather there are higher surface streams. The most interesting way to reach the cache is to follow the course of Rawthey Gill from ample parking near to Rawthey Bridge (SD 712978) (54 22.543 2 26.683). Public footpaths run up both sides of the river, but once you reach common land you may wander at will. Following the course of the stream is the recommended route, but not the fastest way to the cache. A shorter route (five miles round trip) is from Garsdale Foot. An interesting alternative would be to combine this with Grisdale Pike (see details for this cache) giving a six-mile round trip for both caches. The terrain can be tiring walking over the rough peat, and the ground can be very wet in places, even in a drought!
The cache is in rocks which remind me of a limestone pavement (Karst, with Clints & Grykes), but this rock is mixed with millstone grit and sandstone. It is not necessary to move any big stones to find the cache.
Whilst you are on Baugh Fell, you might as well visit the Trig Point at N:54 19.339 W:2 24.873 and also the West Tarn (follow the west edge and cairns) on your way back.
