Geocache Description:

Banks Lake -- a cool place in eastern Washington surrounded by geocaches in many beautiful and/or challenging places. The Devil's Punchbowl is one such place.

The local we ran into says this is called the Devil's Punchbowl. The map shows it as Paynes Gulch, just to the east of Banks Lake. We almost missed it as we drove by, and actually turned around and came back to check it out. We weren't disappointed.

The size of the waterfall dwarfs humans. Check out LogBear and 1hander in the photo, playing around the pool at the bottom of the falls. Sadly, this waterfall is not present year round, disappearing during the driest times of the year. But in spring, when this picture was taken, it was there. It's also present in the winter, often as ice. Then the local ice climbers visit to test their skills.

So, when you come by on your way to (or from) Steamboat Rock State Park, take a quick moment to visit this little spot by the side of the road. Stretch your legs, cool off if it's the right time of the year, do a little CITO (this place needs it!) and then move on. BTW, there is a boat launch just across the highway from here.

About This Cache:
  • You are looking for a green water bottle from last year's WSGA campout, about a pint size-wise.
  • There is some parking nearby, but it it dirt, and it is fairly easy to be parked in if you're not careful. The dirt road is bumpy, so do be careful if you're in your best car. If you're concerned, park at the nearby boat launch on the other side of the highway.
  • I'm sorry to bring you to an area that tends towards being a bit on the garbagey side, but the falls are too good to miss. Bring a garbage sack for a little CITO while you're here.
  • Be careful where you put your hands and watch for snakes; and don't believe anybody (even a local) that tells you it's too cold for snakes unless there's snow on the ground!
  • I am not sure that this will be do-able in the winter.
  • Just in case -- BYOP
  • Most of the short walk to this cache is fairly flat, all except for a 4-6' length of steep uphill.
  • Hints and a spoiler photo will be posted after FTF.
  • Congrats to ?? for their FTF on this cache. They won a set of TB tags.
Finally, please let me know if there are problems with either the cache or its coordinates. Most importantly, have fun!
