Geocache Description:

The small township of Adaminaby was settled in the nineteenth century by people who came to the Monaro as graziers. Later in 1859 and 1860 came gold miners seeking their fortune on the Kiandra goldfields, and later still mining for copper at the Kyloe mine.

Residents of the township were shocked to discover that Adaminaby was selected as the site for a huge dam, which would be the hub of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Lake Eucumbene would fill the Eucumbene River valley and submerge the town. Many residents and landholders refused to move, but by mid 1957 when waters were spreading across the valley, most had moved to the new town site or left the district. 101 buildings from old Adaminaby were moved to the new town site, including two churches.

Today the level of Eucumbene is low due to several years of drought, and the footings of many buildings and rows of trees are visible above the water.

This cache is placed at the high waterline, and is unlikely to be inundated anytime soon. If it does become wet, that will mean extensive rains over a long period, and we would all be grateful for that. Nearby picnic and toilet facilities are pleasant, with a view over the lake. Please take care not to be overlooked as you seek the cache, as this area can be busy with fisherman and boaters.
