Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to a part of the New Germany Nature Reserve that not many people go to. The above co-ordinates are for the parking area. Reserve is open from 07:30 to 17:00 daily except for Christmas Day.

Set high in the scenic hills and valleys of New Germany and bordering on both Westville and Pinetown lies this well preserved wilderness mosaic of forests, bushclumps and coastal grasslands.

This 110 Ha reserve was officially opened to the public in August 1986, but its history stretches back into the mists of time.

Apart from the San, an early nguni nomadic tribe inhabited the area. They lived off the veld, hunting the many game species and setting fire to the grass for early cattle grazing.

The first settlers arrived in 1848 although earlier travelers had passed through the area. Jonas Bergthiel (see GCYVZ0) brought 35 families to the area from Bremen in Germany (hence the name New Germany) to grow cotton. The first school teacher, an unfortunate H. Muchlenbruch was killed by leopard which were common in the hills, while aged locals talk of rhino and elephant on the plains where New Germany and Pinetown are now laid.

The reserve became the commonage for the local farmers to graze their cattle and cut firewood until 1924, when tree felling for firewood was prohibited. Grazing (at 1 penny per beast) was still permitted under the eagle eye of a constable who was appointed to “catch thieves, poachers and trespassers”.

A group of trustees was appointed to manage the reserve area in 1972 but the lans suffered sorely from lack of funds. However, by 1984 the first Nature Conservation Officer was appointed to manage the Reserve and New Germany Nature Reserve as we know it today was officially opened on 1 August 1986.

Today the reserve in managed on the basis of intensive research and includes a careful veld burning program that ensures the future preservation of the rare species of flora and other wildlife.
