Bloodroot Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ScienceCacher: In anticipation of moving out of the area, I posted a request for my traditional geocaches asking if nearby active cachers would be interested in adopting my hides. At one time I was the owner of over 50 active geocaches but responsibilities of work, family and travel prevented me from providing the day to day maintenance that I needed to do to keep these caches active and well stocked.
When the decision was made for us to move about 150 miles away I offered the caches for adoption. I was pleased that most of the older caches were adopted by some great cacher friends who are keeping them active and maintained. However, a few caches were not adopted so I took the opportunity of a beautiful autumn day to collect the caches and enter them into archive status.
I had tried to collect these caches a couple of months ago but was turned away at the entrance to Barboursville Park by police. It turns out that a murderer was believed to be hiding out in the woods at Barboursville Park. Police were combing the woods with dogs and air surveillance looking for the criminal. Since the briers were down, there were no ticks or snakes and the rain forecast for later this week hadn’t started, today was the pick day. I was able to get Ms. ScienceCacher to go out with me since she has sharp eyes and a good intuition for the hides.
While we were out in Barboursville Park, we checked on a couple of caches that belong to friends. Truthfully, we were just enjoying the beautiful day and looking for a cache was as good an excuse as we needed to walk through the woods.
I really like this hide location and hope that another geocacher takes advantage of this location to place another geocache here. I love the bloodroot spring wildflowers that bloom here which is an added bonus for visitors to the area.
Happy caching. I look forward to my visits to the area to check out new caches.

Geocache Description:

This cache is on a beautiful walk with an abundance of wildflowers.  If you are there at just the right time you will see the namesake flowers in bloom.

I got the idea for this hide in late March 2007 when I was out photographing wildflowers with my friends, Joe B. and Granddad Brian.  We thought that this would be a great place for a cache especially for wildflower lovers.

This cache is an easy grab and go, especially if the gate is unlocked.  If the gate is open, which is supposed to be before 6 pm, you can nearly drive right to the cache.  If the gate is closed then you have a short walk on a gravel road.

The original container was a camo painted 30 caliber ammo box stocked with goodies including:

  • a vintage car replica bank from 20th Street Bank
  • a new in the package USB flash drive
  • a stuffed Intel spaceman
  • a foam pencil
  • a couple of small toys
  • a measuring tape
  • a travel bug that I brought from St. Louis

Please hide the cache container well since the area gets a lot of foot traffic when the weather is nice.

Since the cache was muggled in early 2013, the container was replaced with a 4 X 6 Lock and Lock container about 13 meters from the original cache hide. Coordinates have been updated to the posted location should be accurate.
Except for the last 15 feet or so, this cache is mostly handicap accessible.
