Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the above coordinates.

The Forestry Commission have been replacing the cycle posts and putting on new numbers. Please use the new numbers on the top of the posts.

After collecting the first piece of information park your car at Holmsley Walk car park N50° 47.583 W001° 42.225

The twelve makeshift airfields that were scattered around the New Forest played a vital role during the Second World War, especially during the build-up for the D-Day invasion of France, when thousands of sorties were carried out daily. In addition to the RAF, units of American, Canadian, Free French, Polish, Australian and Czech personnel were stationed on these New Forest airfields at one time. There were over 4,000 at Beaulieu alone.
Several of those airfields are marked by individual memorials, but now an elegant large memorial, surmounted by a Dakota propeller, has been unveiled on the edge of the old Holmsley airfield commemorating all those aircrews and local civilians who collectively served on these airfields 60 years ago. Those wartime personnel were involved in training, defence and offensive missions, and with the coming of peace bringing home thousands of prisoners-of-war and Service men and women.
The airfields were sited at Beaulieu, Holmsley, Stoney Cross, Calshot, Lymington, Christchurch, Needs Ore Point, Sway, Hurn, Winkton, Bisterne and Ibsley. Of those just Hurn survives, as Bournemouth International Airport, with little trace of the remainder as the Forest reclaims them.

This is a circular walk of about 3 miles, which should take about 2 hours. The surfaces vary from tarmac, firm gravel track to well-worn rough tracks that could take a large wheeled buggy. After a very wet period it will be boggy in parts.
If you want to take your time, enjoy the countryside and watch the ponies there are plenty of places to have a picnic. This is a child and dog friendly area.

You will need a pen and some paper (maybe a calculator) to do some maths and to make a note of coordinates.

At the memorial note the Grid Reference (GR) for Lymington SZ aaa bbb
Take the first number (aaa) and add 615 answer = fff
Take the second number (bbb) and subtract 107 answer = ggg
Next Coordinates = N50° 47.fff W001° 41.ggg

Move your car to Holmsley Walk car park. If on a bike it’s only half a mile.

At the power pole there are 2 discs each with one number.
Multiply the second number by 102 answer = jjj
Multiply the second number by 78 answer =kkk
Next coordinates = N50° 47.jjj W001° 41.kkk

Look at the gates and work out the total number of diagonal cross braces.
Multiply this number by 166 answer = ccc
Multiply this number by 31 answer = ddd
Next coordinates = N50°47.ccc W001° 41.ddd

Look at the post there is a number on it.
Multiply the number by 5 and then add 25 answer = ppp
Subtract the number 158 answer = 0qq
Next coordinates = N50° 47.ppp W001° 41.0qq

Look at the post there is a number on it.
Multiply the number by 4 and then add 46 answer = rrr
Add the number 52 answer = sss
Next coordinates = N50° 47.rrr W001° 41.sss

Look at the post there is a number on it.
Multiply the number by 2 and then add 114 answer = mmm
Multiply the number by 4 and then add 35 answer = nnn
Next coordinates = N50° 47.mmm W001°41.nnn

You should now be at the end of a metalled road.
Face the main entrance from about 30 metres and count the number of upright posts in the right hand angled straight section of fence. Do not count past the small gate. Do not count the 2 posts supporting the dog sign. Start counting with the larger upright (on your right) where the 5 wire strand fence stops/starts. This will be post number one.

Take this number and multiply it by 690 answer = xxxx
Take the same number and multiply it by 189 answer = yyyy
Next coordinates = N50° 4x.xxx W001°4y.yyy

The cache is a 1-litre container placed on the ground.
To keep the cache dry it is a box within a box, please return it this way.

At the cache site there is holly, gloves could be handy.

This cache is placed under the agreement between the GAGB and Forestry Commission in the New Forest.
